The 80-hour basic dog trainer course is designed for individuals who want to develop a solid foundation in canine behaviour, training principles, and hands-on skills. 

Rooted in science, this course gives you the tools to understand dogs, communicate clearly, and teach reliably. 

It’s ideal if you’re considering a career in dog training, volunteer work, or simply want to build a high level of competence with your own dog(s).

Basic Dog Trainer Summer Program Details

What You’ll Learn During This Program

Over the two week course, the training is divided among several modules. Each module includes hands-on training with your dog or an appointed dog for the duration of the program.

Module Topics Covered
Dog Behaviour  • Canine ethology, body language, vocalizations, signals of stress/comfort
• Social cognitive learning
• Emotional states and their effects on behaviour
Learning Theory • Classical conditioning and operant conditioning
• Schedules of reinforcement
• Non-associative learning 
Behaviour Modification • Identifying unwanted behaviour and their root causes
• Systematic desensitization and counterconditioning
• Free shaping and capturing
Tools of the Trade • Collars, harnesses, leashes, head halters, clickers, target sticks
• Use, fit, safety, ethical considerations
• Training setups: indoor/outdoor, distractions, environmental structuring
Basic Obedience Training • Sit, down, stand, stay, recall, walking on a loose leash
• Polite greetings, impulse control, leave-it/drop-it exercises
• Using markers (clicker or verbal) and understanding cues and prompts
Husbandry (Dog Care) • Veterinary exam, nail trimming, dental care, hygiene, grooming
• Daily care routines, safety, travel, and handling

  • Create and using training plans for common behavioural issues.
